This was a special opportunity to connect with national leadership and stakeholders across the state to celebrate the investment that we are making in children and youth.  Come celebrate our state's progress and help build upon Connecticut's strong commitment to healthy youth development.  Since 1993, Connecticut has supported front-line youth workers with training, resource development, community engagement and statewide collaboration.  The Keynote Speaker was Elaine Johnson, Senior Fellow for Youth Development Affairs at the Academy of Educational Development in Washington D.C. and former National BEST* Initiative Director.  Ms. Johnson discussed national trends, best practices and the next steps to leverage our work.

Hosted by: Youth Development Training and Resource Center, The Consultation Center, Inc., Connecticut Afterschool Network, Inc.,
and Citywide Youth Coalition, Inc.

Sponsored by: Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, CT Dept of Mental Health and Addiction Services, CT Office of Policy & Management,
and Perrin Family Foundation.

Dinner: Reflections, Realities and Results in Greater New Haven

Over 60 people interested in the welfare and future of youth in Greater New Haven joined for a buffet dinner, exciting conversation and community celebration.  Since 1976, we have worked in coalition to build a community in which youth can succeed.  Although there are now 45 nationally, New Haven was one of the first BEST* sites in the country, receiving implementation funding from the Wallace Fund, Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and CT Dept. of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

This special evening was a unique opportunity for conversation with two national leaders in youth work.  Elaine Johnson, Senior Fellow for Youth Development Affairs at the Academy of Educational Development in Washington D.C. and former National BEST Initiative Director and Wendy Wheeler, President of the Innovation Center for Youth and Community Development in Washington DC.  Ms. Johnson and Ms. Wheeler spoke on how to build on the amazing achievements by youth leaders, youth workers and committed funders in Greater New Haven, and facilitated a discussion on what are our next steps as we advance the youth development agenda in this region.

We thanked major stakeholders and honored and celebrated the leadership of Kaye Harvey, a founder of Citywide Youth Coalition and champion of youth.

The National Building Exemplary Systems for Training Youth Workers (BEST) Initiative provides a delivery strategy for the Advancing Youth Development curriculum.  This initiative provides technical assistance, training and networking to community-based systems, i.e., BEST Sites, as they work to strengthen their capacity to train youth workers in the concepts of youth development.
